DERK showed us their necessities of having a reference guide to do hydrogeological characterizations and model construction in mining projects, for the geotechnical design of open pit and underground mines.
This requirement is in the context of the “Analysis and Confection of Geotechnical Standards Services” that Geotechnical Division of the Northern District entrusted DERK.

To elaborate this document, it was considered, among others, the following records and norms as baseline:

• American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM).
• Basic concepts in hydrogeology, International Center of underground hydrology Foundation, 2009.
• Underground Hydrology, E. Custodio and M.R. Llamas, 1996, Vol. I-II.
• Information provided by CODELCO Divisions.
• Available technical literature.

On the base of the information gathering the practical guide was conceived and named as “Hydrogeological Characterization Procedure for Open pit and Underground Geotechnical”.
