Saltwater intrusion diagnosis at Aconcagua rivermouth,
Concón Plant, Valparaíso Region
Problem
ESVAL asked for a hydrogeological study at the rivermouth, in the place where Concón plant is located along with the well field that feeds it.
This sector has an increasing demand of drinkable water during summer periods and its proximity to the coastline makes its groundwater sources affected by the saltwater interface, therefore, it obligates to study the interface geometry, evolution due to groundwater pumping and ways to manage the resource more efficiently.
Methodology
The methodology on this study consisted in gathering and analyze records, mainly the ones given by our client, hydrogeological field recognition, pumping tests, water quality vertical probing and geophysical exploration using VES.
Results
Collected information allowed to define the saltwater interface geometry, define the hydrogeological conceptual model, perform a water balance and conduct a proposal to efficiently manage this resource.
